I bought this version, then the versions of Gambhirananda and Nikhilinanda. Compare Isa Upanisad 3:Katz & Egenes:Sunless are those worlds calledcovered in blinding darkness;there, after departing, go those menwho are slayers of the Self.It has a footnote saying this verse translated by Mahesh Yogi, their guru.here is Gambhirananda:Those worlds of devils are covered by blinding darkness, Those people that kill the Self go to them after giving up this body.and Nikhilanada:Verily, those worlds of the asuras are enveloped in blind darkness; and thereto they all repair after death who are slayers of Atman.Both of the swamis include Sankaracharya's commentary. The only commentary offered by Katz is that the translation by Mahesh Yogi. Without the commentary it is hard to make sense of the verse, even with multiple readings. Both of the swamis offer some introduction to the Sanskrit words in the verse. This is where the Katz version begins to look like a waste of money. The Sanskrit has the word "asura" in it, which means demon. G. translates it properly, and N. just uses the Sanskrit word, with commentary beneath explaining the word. The connotation of that word should not be avoided, as one loses an important meaning of the passage.Here is Easwaran:Those who deny the Self are born againBlind to the Self, enveloped in darkness,Utterly devoid of love for the LordEaswaran at least has notes. Mascaro and Easwaran get the feel for the passage, but Katz is so slick the meaning is very hard to access.Since the Upanishads are for study, get something where you can get a sense of the original words of the passage. Easwaran and Mascaro i would avoid too because of loose use of the word "Lord" for example. That word tell you nothing, because in Sanskrit there are many words that can be translated by that one English word, and they all have different connotations. In this case translating Atman as "Lord" is close to being irresponsible. Better to have left it alone, or to follow the more standard translation "Self" (with a capital s). Both G and N have Sankaracharya's commentary, which is very authoritative. You will not be able to read the text straight through easily, but both have some summary information about the Upanishad, so you will be able to have a grasp of the whole thing as you read the parts. This is more complicated though with longer Upanishad, although those are broken up into various parts.

This is the most profound translation of the Upanishads that I have ever read. Besides being fun to read and true to the original, the translators clearly have the experiences that are being discussed in the Upanishads. When a translation comes from direct experience, as this does, I notice that some quality of that experience comes to the reader. For example, the conversation in the Katha Upanishad and Death are good to read for anyone who is experiencing a loss of a family member or facing a serious illness--well presented, beautifully phrased, and profoundly enlightening. I hope that Profs. Vernon Katz and Thomas Egenes translate more of the Vedic literature soon.

Juan Mascaro's selections of the Upanishads are an intriguing glimpse into Hindu scripture and represent "the end" of the ancient Vedas and by extension the end of all knowing and seeking. The selections have various modes of presentation but one unifying message and theme: seeking to know the knower, to see the light of Truth, to go beyond the cycle of life and death.These diverse writings distill the multitude of cosmology into but a few lines; they fearlessly ask and answer the most daunting questions mankind has thought to ask, in but a few pages; in line with so many enduring texts they emphasize letting go of desire and achieving self-control. These selections are brief in terms of pages but longer than most in terms of meaning and value. If you get through this book in a matter of days, you didn't really read it, you didn't pay attention, you didn't respect the wisdom or give it its due.I am not overstating when I say that aside from the great value of these selections, Juan Mascaro's introduction would have been worth the cost on its own. As with the Dhammapada he shows a deep appreciation for the source material and an equally strong desire to retain its poetry and potency while bringing these ancient works to modern readers in a fluid, impactful style. It is truly a shame that Mascaro was not a translator of more ancient works, but his three translations for Penguin Classics are perhaps more than anyone could ask for and will certainly remain among my most cherished books

I first bought the Kindle version and began reading, and felt it was necessary to then purchase a paperback version in order to continue.The problem with the Kindle version is that it was released with wonky fonts not aligning (the transliteration font is too far above the baseline). This is very distracting. I feel that the Kindle version should be immediately corrected and re-released, with a free upgrade for purchasers of the first release.Meanwhile, I now additionally own the paperback version and am happily continuing to dive deep into this superb translation of the Upanishads!

Very beautiful "journal". Honestly..I don't have the heart to write in it because it has such beautiful pictures, quotes and inspiration. I like having it to look at though. It makes me smile.

I ordered 2 of these journals for both of my nieces, ages 17 and 14. When I was growing up, I loved journals like this one. I think it's important that teenagers explore their hopes and dreams and innermost thoughts, and it's even better if they put it on paper. Now that I'm 30, I have so many journals like this one to look back on. I cringe at some of the comments I wrote in those things, but I also smile and become teary-eyed at others. It's fascinating to look back at some of my dreams and to realize I've accomplished them and to marvel at the unique path my life has taken. I wanted to give both of my nieces a similar experience. I didn't want to buy them something that they'll use for a year or so and toss out when something new and more exciting comes along. I thought that this would make a perfect gift because it's something that hopefully they keep for years and can reflect back on as adults. I've included a note in each journal that says something to that extent and lets them know how proud I am of both of them and that I love them.Now on to the book itself - first off, the artwork is gorgeous. Some of the drawings (they're more like paintings) are absolutely frame-worthy. They appeal to both adult women and teens because they're somewhat whimsical while still giving off a modern feel. The colors are so vivid and bright, they almost jump out at you. The quotes are all very thought-provoking. And the prompt questions really got me thinking myself... so often in life, we forget to explore ourselves, to ask ourselves important questions. We get caught in the rat race, in our everyday hectic schedules and we lose ourselves. Even though I bought this journal for my teenage nieces, it's certainly something that I'd consider purchasing for myself as well. It really does appeal to women of all ages.It would also make a great meditation companion. As a writer, I find writing to be very meditative. It really assists me in my daily breathing exercises and meditation sessions. It helps me to clear my head, to focus on nothing but myself for a few minutes. I usually use a blank notebook, but this journal would be even more helpful.Buy this for all the women in your life who need a little bit of inspiration or encouragement, and then treat yourself to one as well!

How often have you put change on hold because things werenâ€™t where you thought they should be for you to make that change? Iâ€™ve done. Patel, the author, has done. Odds are good that youâ€™ve done, or maybe youâ€™re doing it now. â€œStart Where You Areâ€ encourages you to stop looking, and waiting, for that other day, and to instead start where you are. Her journal asks probing, thought provoking questions to help you find out more about yourself: what you really love, your motivations, how see yourself and how you feel others perceive you, and more. However she does mix it up. Sometimes the journal will just ask a question for you to answer, but other times youâ€™re drawing pictures, or filling in circles or other shapes, or coloring in a drawing.Along with her journaling exercises, Patel includes inspiring quotes from a variety of sources. Since sheâ€™s an accomplished artist, with lines of stationary sold in boutiques, the quotes are presented in colorful, whimsical fonts, suitable for framing (if youâ€™re willing to cut them out of the book).It can be difficult to think about yourself and your desires, particularly if you think theyâ€™re unattainable. Artist and author Meera Lee Patel does her best to make the journey a painless and playful one.

I stumbled across this journal in search of a blank one as I wanted to start writing to get some thoughts onto paper. I found myself drawn to this journal for self exploration by the cover, quotes, and prompts that it promised and I'm very impressed! The quotes are amazingly drawn and very inspiring. The prompts make you think while having fun and I love it. A great way to reflect on yourself :)

I have been struggling with my sense of self, who I am and what I want in life; this journal has been an eye opener to things I needed to find in myself. Love it, highly recommend for anyone feeling that they have lost touch with who they are.

I was so excited to get this, I thought a guided self exploration journal would be great but I have to say this book is 85% just pretty quotes and pages without much room to write and nothing very thought provoking. Some of the pages do not even make sense on what you should be writing. If I hadnâ€™t written in two or three of the pages I would return it.

About the Author Adrian Slater graduated in 1975 from Edinburgh University with a degree in Biological Sciences. He studied for a PhD at Glasgow University in the processing and transport of RNA in human cells and continued there as a postdoctoral researcher on human heat shock proteins. He moved to the University of Nottingham School of Agriculture to a post-doctoral research post working on the cloning of ripening-related genes from tomato. He was appointed as a lecturer in plant molecular biology at Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University, Leicester) in 1986 and has continued working there on the plant cell cycle and the genetic manipulation of plant development. He is currently the deputy director of the De Montfort University Norman Borlaug Institute for Plant Science Research. Dr Nigel Scott graduated in 1976 from Leeds University with a degree in Biochemistry and Genetics then studied for a PhD in Bacterial Genetics at Newcastle University. During a post-doctoral career that included periods at the University of Warwick and the NERC Institute of Virology and Environmental Microbiology, Oxford, he did research in various areas of microbial development and plant-virus interactions. He was appointed as a lecturer in plant molecular biology at De Montfort University in 1992 and continues to lecture and carry out research in the genetic manipulation of plant development, genetics and microbiology. Dr Mark Fowler graduated in 1987 from Leicester Polytechnic with a degree in Science and the Environment and stayed at Leicester Polytechnic/De Montfort University to study for a PhD in the control of plant cell division. He has been a post-doctoral research scientist, junior research fellow and now research fellow all at De Montfort University.

I'm an avid reader of this genre and this author is fast becoming my favorite! It's 1:25am as I've just completed the second book in the series. I just could not put it down. Glad I don't have work tomorrow (actually later). If you like action, intrigue, non vulgar entertaining novels, this is it. The author leaves you wanting more. The main character is a hero in every sense of the word and we could all use a few more of those. At least I could. Which is why I gravitate towards this genre to "escape" reality from time to time. Step aside Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, Patrick Rothfuss, Brent Weeks et al.... make room for the next great Science Fantasy author. This was an awesome read. Can't wait for the next!!!!

The author portrayed women in this book in such a way that I can't help but feel he doesn't have much respect for women in general. They were depicted as extremely petulant, catty, and childish. It's a shame they were so one-dimensional as to be almost caricatures, because the rest of the story was enjoyable (which is why I gave it four stars.) But, if I had to read one more time about how the women batted their eyelashes or got into cat fights over the super handsome main character or the phrase, "I'm a warrior, not a healer!", I would've thrown my kindle at a wall.

Nope, sorry. Done with the series. I gave it two books and the writing never improved, he said mournfully.My suspension of disbelief was stretched so far the elastic is gone. Nineteen-year-old hero is a master-everything, has memorized the floorplans of all the major residences and the maps of all the towns, knows current events even though living 19 years in a fortress of solitude, and yet still believes *friends* are assigned by some metaphysical entity. He's a super-swordsman who can't be beat, and except for his literal interpretation of everyday usage, has no handicaps or fatal flaws.Head-hopping POV with every paragraph. Adverb abuse. A plot that made no sense. Leaps of logic. And, guess what, Our Hero may be royal blood. (That's not a spoiler because anyone who read the dust jacket could see that one coming.)A fun read for the kids maybe, but far from a polished effort by a student of the craft.

If you're reading reviews for "Reign of Madness," you've probably already read "Free the Darkness," the first book in the series.Well, this book is just as good as the first one. So if you enjoyed "Free the Darkness," stop reading and buy the book.Over Labor Day weekend I read the first book in 24 hours and enjoyed it so much I dove into the second one, which I also read in 24 hours. I couldn't put it down. The editing was solid. The author is not redefining the genre, but he is writing an enjoyable story. As I said in my review for "Free the Darkness," it's not "Lord of the Rings" or "Game of Thrones," but like the Fast and Furious franchise, it's a damn good ride.If I had to pick a theme for the story, it would be friendship. The main character, Rezkin, meets new friends and learns more about friendships, which is something he never had growing up. And many of the new characters were multi-dimensional enough to keep the story moving along.What I found disappointing were the female characters, especially Rezkin's relationship with his "Girl Friend," Frisha. In the second book, many of the female characters were one dimensional, including Frisha. Although Rezkin further developed as a charactor by learning about friendship, his relationship with Frisha is lacking. They share little alone time and Rezkin's feelings toward Frisha come across as more as if he is pursuing a marriage of convenience. I hope in book three the relationship becomes more personal and Rezkin begins to learn about love.Just with book one, my biggest complaint about the book is the abrupt ending. A better ending could have included a touching scene with Rezkin talking privately with Frisha.

Pros: it's an exciting story and unusual kind of main character. The development of Rezkin is fascinating, as he is coming to wrestle with his relationships in this. His off kilter view of the world entertains the whole way through, effectively deconstructing social norms. There's lots of action and interesting characters. The spec ops element to the strikers is fun.Cons: he's practically invincible and the best at everything still. Him being a tad more human would have helped with the suspense a bit. Additionally, some conversations repeat in a noticeable way, particularly when justifying Rezkin's actions in a morally tenuous situation. The author seems to need the reader to conclude that Rekzin is without fault at all times that he will address the same situation in two or more bits of dialogue to reinforce his perfection. It's a bit taxing, but then the pace of the book is too slow for a fantasy adventure such as it is.Overall, I appreciated the read and will be buying the 3rd.

I read a great deal. I was lucky enough to stumble upon this author, and I read few good reviews so I thought I'd give the series a shot. I don't think any review can truly describe how good this series truly is. It's full of action, but still amazing character development, and an incredible story. I cannot wait for the 3rd book!Give this series a try if you're looking for something new, and believe me you will not be disappointed.
