Born in Okinawa, TOMIKO HIGA worked for twenty-seven years at the Okinawa branch of the American Express Company while completing her high school and undergraduate education. I bought this book to read to my mom. She can’t see well enough to read anymore, and I knew she’d like this book, as I had read it before myself. The author is one year older than her, but lived in Okinawa during WWII; whereas, my mom lived in Indiana. I thought she would enjoy hearing about how similar and terribly different their lives were. It is a sad and yet uplifting story of a very young girl somehow surviving the battle of Okinawa. My mom did indeed enjoy the book.

but is no relation. And found I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There are many mentions in the customer reviews about it being middle school or young adolescent lit, so I was a little leery. And it is in a way, because the episodes in her life are just presented the way she remembered them. There is no tying it back to a larger political idea, no closure of narrative like one expect in an adult novel, and often "characters" in her story walk away never to be seen from or heard from again. So, in that way, if you are expecting an adult account with deep reflections, ramifications both political and social, and prescriptions and condemnations, then you need to read another book. But Higa's account was refreshing in that way that children are. She presents everything without guile or over-analysis. You feel the visceral experience with her as she climbs over the wasteland that her country becomes. She never sugar-coats anything because there is no need to when just presented factually. You feel her need, understand her young judgements, and are just charmed by her plucky character. In today's multicultural educational system, this book would be a good addition to any history of WWII.

From the moment I read the first chapter to the very last, I didn't put this book down once. Nonfiction stories like these remind me of how unpredictable and short life can really be- real, gut wrenching tragedies do exist! They can be ruthless and unbiased, damaging lives of innocent children like this young girl. But it's incredible how the magnification of life, love, family, and joy can result from terrible hardships, giving us, the readers, a new perspective on our own lives. I can honestly say that I've carried a new sense of gratitude and appreciation since finishing this book.

What a powerful story of a girl just trying to stay alive and be with her family while a war rages around that she and all the locals are just trying to live their own lives. This is such a moving story. It is a short easy read. If you want to see how war affects civilians read this book. It did make me cry. It is a very emotional story. I love this book. I wish I could have met this women. I have been to Okinawa and seen the war sites, which is the entire island. Great Book. I think everyone should read.

I Enjoyed this book very much. Being of Okinawan ancestry, it was not until I visited Okinawa that I took an interest in the Battle of Okinawa. The ravages of war on a country and its people is so horrible....This was a brave little girl, who lived to tell her story. This is NOT a book for elementary school children.

Just amazing. This true story has remained vividly in my memory and psyche since I read it, which was over a decade ago. Profound, truly profound. A must read.

I worked with women and men who survived the Battle when I was serving as a Dietitian at naval hospital Okinawa on Camp Lester. I wish I read it before my arrival but I managed to read it later in my tour. Her story is vivid and really helped me understand the plight of the Okinawa people. I purchased several copies and began distributing it to everyone I served with there. The story is compelling!

My own mother was just 5 years old and lived in Naha at the time the battle for Okinawa took place. She has never spoken at any length of what she remembers. I only know my grandmother and my aunt were shot (my aunt was wrapped and carried on my grandmother's back. One shot killed both of them) My mother and her two brothers watched them both die. This book allowed me to understand exactly what it was like for my mother without her having to say a word. Thank you so much Tomiko Higa san

I was honored to be a part of the amazing book launch team for 'Joey' and as such, I was sent a copy of the book to read before it was published. Let me tell you, I read the book in 3 days and the only reason I didn't read it in one was because of school. It is a true story that tells the tale of a rescue horse and former champion jumper who tragically became blind because of abuse and neglect from a previous owner. Joey finds his way to a therapy center for kids and horses alike, a place called Hope Reins where they rescue horses and train them to be 'equine counselors' for the kids who come to Hope Reins for therapy. Once Joey arrives (with another horse who plays a big part in the story) he begins his long training to get him ready to help the kids, even though he is blind. Through his blind trust (literally) he touches kids and adults alike, from a small girl who won't talk to the volunteers at Hope Reins, helping to teach people what it means to truly trust wholeheartedly. To avoid any spoilers (we all know how annoying that is) I will just say that from the moment you pick up this book you will find it practically impossible to put it down until you finish it. Even for people who aren't necessarily horse enthusiasts, it is a touching story, and I will warn you that there is a big possibility of ugly crying once or twice. Even if you don't usually go for non-fiction animal stories, I highly recommend that you read this book as it is published. Besides being a story of an amazing and sometimes human-like horse in his ability to sense emotions, it is a story of how a horse left to die because of his physical impairment helps everyone he meets to find healing and peace, and he can do the same for you through this amazing testimony of his too short life.In summary, GO PREORDER THIS BOOK!!! Joey will bless you as you read his true story. God will call you closer to Himself as you open your heart to the possibility that He desires to help, save, and restore broken and hurting people for His joy of purpose! Other than the Bible, Joey is now the only book ever that I have read every word from cover to cover. Before long, they also began to sell Afghan hashish, Hawaiian pot (the storied "Maui Wowie"), and eventually Colombian cocaine, much of which the Brotherhood smuggled to California in secret compartments inside surfboards and Volkswagen minibuses driven across the border.

They also befriended Leary himself, enlisting him in the goal of buying a tropical island where they could install the former Harvard philosophy professor and acid prophet as the high priest of an experimental utopia. The Brotherhood's most legendary contribution to the drug scene was homemade: Orange Sunshine, the group's nickname for their trademark orange-colored acid tablet that happened to produce an especially powerful trip. Brotherhood foot soldiers passed out handfuls of the tablets to communes, at Grateful Dead concerts, and at love-ins up and down the coast of California and beyond. The Hell's Angels, Charles Mason and his followers, and the unruly crowd at the infamous Altamont music festival all tripped out on this acid. Jimi Hendrix even appeared in a film starring Brotherhood members and performed a private show for the fugitive band of outlaws on the slope of a Hawaiian volcano.
